Meskel in Toronto -September 26, 2004
On the 26th of September the Eritrean Orthodox Tewadeho churches of Medhane Alem and St. Michael held a ceremony to commemorate Meskel. Meskel which dates back roughly 1,600 years symbolizes the discovery Empress Helena (the mother of Constantine the Great) made of the true cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified .

The ceremony involves the priests and their followers singing and chanting as they circle a bonfire carrying crosses. Present at the ceremony were the priests of St. Michael church and Medhane Alem church. The festival is also very important because it is a time where many reunite with their families to commemorate the event together.
